Birdie

All the benefits without the hassle

Two birds founded this vibrant, roomy bar: hatted chef Simonn Hawke, who began Lolli Redini (see Best Restaurants), and her partner, Leah.

Birdie is a local favourite and the thing we love about it is all its nooks and crannies – you can sit at the bar, tuck yourself away in a corner or enjoy a drink al fresco. Birdie serves super fresh, vibrant bar food with a Euro vibe alongside fabulous cocktails, mocktails and local and international wines. Hint: Happy hour is 4pm-6pm on some days (check their socials for details) and if you are a sweet tooth, you can roll next door to Spilt Milk.

Union Bank

All the benefits without the hassle

Located only a block from Birdie, the Union Bank is an institution in Orange thanks to its beautiful heritage facade, numerous dining options and glorious magnolia tree. Plonk yourself at a table outside in the Arthouse bar and courtyard space on a balmy summer’s night and enjoy the curated list of wine, where regional wines shine, and the modern bar menu. If you are looking for a slightly fancier experience, with more attentive dining service, book a table inside at the Schoolhouse Restaurant (warning: it can be hard to leave once you sink into the stylish blue velvet chairs).

The Union Bank has three private rooms for hire to cater for groups large and small, including The Bank and Lobby rooms and The Vinery (outdoors). Book ahead, because everyone wants to cash in on the Bank’s vibe, no matter the season.

The Parkview

All the benefits without the hassle

Affectionately known as “The Parky”, the Parkview is a great option whether you are dining with or without kids. Inside, you can sip a beer on tap at the front bar or order at the bistro (we recommend the chicken schnitty and the curries are also winning) and grab a table. Our tip, though, is to head out the back, where there is ample seating and lovely shady foliage in the warmer months. The Parky has live music and screens major sporting events – check their socials for details.

Hotel Canobolas

All the benefits without the hassle

A hop, skip and a jump from The Parky, the architecturally imposing Hotel Canobolas is a larger pub with seating outdoors, on the main shopping strip of Orange (Summer Street), and in an internal courtyard out the back. There are plenty of beers on tap and local wines to order and a range of indoor spaces with couch or table seating. The Hotel makes top-notch wood-fired pizza and has a big bistro menu with lots of options for kids, too. If you’re after a bit more spice, the pub also houses Gong Thai, a firm favourite with locals. “The Nob”, as locals call it, holds regular trivia nights and is a good times go-to.

Ferment Orange Wine Centre

All the benefits without the hassle

Keep your eyes and ears wide open because you might just meet the winemaker whose wine you are quaffing in this lovely little bar. Housed in arguably Orange’s cutest small heritage building, Ferment is run by Simon and his friendly team, a wealth of knowledge when it comes to local wine (and that further afield).

Ferment acts as a cellar door for over 18 local wineries that are not quite large enough to have their own cellar door. Ferment takes its wine seriously but still has a laid by atmosphere. Visitors can book a wine tasting but the wine bar is for walk-ins only.

Washington & Co

All the benefits without the hassle

With its dark décor and timber features, this popular small bar on the main street is literally a roll down the hill from many of Orange’s dining places. With fun-loving staff and tunes, it’s the perfect place to have a post-dinner digestive or cocktail and it is often heaving with locals on a weekend. Bottle upon bottle of whiskey, spirits and liqueurs line the bar. There’s so much choice, in fact, it can be a little overwhelming, but the staff know their product and if all else fails you can order a classic cocktail, or a quirkier number if you’re feeling loose. The bar’s young owners regularly host wine and spirit tastings. Check out their socials for details.

Parrot Distilling Co

All the benefits without the hassle

Parked in what was an old mechanical workshop a one-minute drive from the heart of town, Parrot is all about gin and celebrates the region’s botanicals. However you like gin, they’ve got it – from their own growing range made on site with their resplendent copper distillery (her name is Heather Anne), to Ginspressos. Book a tasting with a small or large group in The Aviary room and take flight on all the gin goodness. If you over-indulge, grab a tasty wood-fired pizza to help you return earth-side. Note: Parrot closes on Monday and Tuesday.

Agrestic Grocer

All the benefits without the hassle

From morning to night, this rustic venue has you covered. A true champion of regional produce, ‘The Agrestic’ is open every day, all day for breakfast and lunch. Oh, but wait, you decided over lunch to cook dinner at your B&B? Grab a basket and peruse the fruit and veggies at the Grocer’s local produce shop, which also stocks everything from beer soap to free-range eggs. You can also stock up on some local cool-climate wines at its cellar door.

By night, The Agrestic is a popular live music venue, with regular gigs from regional and national acts. Check out its website for upcoming events. Hint: Beer lovers can find six offerings on tap from neighbouring business Badlands Brewery, as well as Pig In The House wines.
