Good Eddy

All the benefits without the hassle

Run by husband and wife team Toby and Maddy Howell in what was formerly a printing factory, this chic café is passionate about coffee, from the range of beans it roasts and serves to the coffee accessories on the shelves. A much-loved local hang, it has a small but super tasty menu, including a ripper egg and bacon (locally made, of course) roll. Nab a table in the front room and watch the parade of people pop in for their fix, or walk through into the back room, where occasional art exhibitions are held. Note: Good Eddy opens Monday to Friday only.

Hawkes General Store

All the benefits without the hassle

Hawkes General Store offers a sneaky way to do some shopping on the pretence of having a coffee. But then, the latter also happens to be top shelf. Order inside and let loquacious barista Liam work his magic. You can grab a table under the quince or magnolia trees and enjoy the chatty buzz of local regulars as you wait for your coffee (check out the short but sweet menu), or simply browse inside the store, which is full of all sorts of goodies, from fashion to crockery, paintings and all manner of gifts. Hint: Check out the range of humorous cards stacked on the right as you enter.

Bill’s Beans East Orange

All the benefits without the hassle

This small café in trendy East Orange is one of Orange’s OG coffee pioneers. Couple Ricky and Carlie and their tight-knit crew pump out the coffee from the early hours and typically trade for public holidays – even Christmas! The café is known for its cranking coffee as well as its small but super delicious breakfast and lunch menu. “Bill’s” is a magnet for some of the town’s most creative types and we recommend grabbing a table outside to people watch. Hint: If you are missing your pooch you are bound to run into one here.

Byng Street Local Store

All the benefits without the hassle

Visually striking from the street with its bull-nose, wrap-around veranda, Byng Street is a modern café that serves up robust coffee and a breakfast and lunch menu. This place literally hums from the moment it opens, a testament to its popularity. There’s plenty of room inside and in a new extended room but our hot recommendation is to order your coffee and nab a spot outside on the veranda, where you can watch the world go by.

Academy Coffee Roasters

All the benefits without the hassle

They roast, they provide beans to local coffee haunts, and they mean coffee business! Founded in 2015, Academy are small batch roasting specialists who love talking their game with café owners, baristas or home brewers. A bright and buzzy space, the café is a lovely spot to enjoy a brew indoors or out – we recommend sitting on the seats in the gorgeous northern sun out the front.

Groundstone

All the benefits without the hassle

Nestled in Orange’s cultural precinct close to Orange Regional Museum and Art Gallery and the local library, Groundstone is a favourite meeting place all-year round. With its Scandi interiors and lush greenery, Groundstone oozes natural charm; ditto its menu, which has a focus on fresh and seasonal local produce.

The coffee is consistently good and there’s a range of freshly-baked cakes and slices at the counter if you need a sugar hit. It’s nice and cool on a hot summer’s day inside but we recommend sitting under one of the bright green umbrellas outside.

Honorable Mentions

All the benefits without the hassle

Nimrods has two locations (one at fashion and art hub The Sonic, the other a few doors from the Canobolas Hotel), with local lad Nimrod and his team delivering excellent brews. Racine bakery is located in the Woolworth’s car park and enables you to grab an amazing, fluffy pastry or two with your preferred coffee. Anything Grows nursery and gift shop is one of the prettiest places in town to sip a coffee. Its breakfast and lunch menu is also cracking.
